The Right Reverend Robert Codman
Robert Codman, the third Bishop of Maine, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1859. Codman was educated in public schools and later graduated in law from Harvard University in 1882. Codman practiced law for some years, but upon the death of his brother, the Reverend Archibald Codman, his thoughts turned to the ordained ministry. He studied in the General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was ordained deacon in 1893 and priest in 1894. He served at All Saints Church in Ashmont, Boston, and subsequently became rector of St John's Church in Boston Highlands.
Codman was elected as the Bishop of Maine and was consecrated on February 24, 1900, in St Luke's Cathedral in Portland. During his tenure, the diocese increased by almost a dozen more missions, and Bishop Codman added the beautiful Emmanuel Chapel to St. Luke’s. The Cowley Fathers, members of the Society of St. John the Evangelist in Cambridge, Massachusetts, staffed many of the parishes and missions north of Bangor at the turn of the century, leaving their mark on the theology and liturgy of the northern half of the state.
Codman served as bishop till his death in 1915.
